As expected, Paul McCartney has been announced as one of the headliners at the 2022 Glastonbury Festival. His June 25 performance will take place two years after he was scheduled to do the honors there for the giant festival’s 50th anniversary. (Glastonbury was not held in 2020 and 2021, due to the pandemic.)

His long-awaited return to the concert stage with his “Got Back” 2022 tour with the first 16 dates at U.S. stadiums and arenas announced, beginning on April 28. (On Feb. 25, a second concert at Boston’s Fenway Park was added; on Mar. 10, a second show in Oakland, Calif. was announced.) The U.S. itinerary begins in the west and ends in the east, a little over a week before the Glastonbury Festival, which had given rise to speculation that he would join the lineup. He had previously played the festival in 2004. Tickets to the entire Glastonbury Festival, which spans June 22-26, are sold out. (Among the dozens of other acts scheduled to perform are Diana Ross, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Billie Eilish, and Kendrick Lamar.)

The original Feb. 18 tour announcement arrived nearly three years after he completed the final date of his “Freshen Up” tour on a memorable evening on July 13, 2019, at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

In a message on all of his social media accounts, McCartney wrote, “I said at the end of the last tour that I’d see you next time. I said I was going to get back to you. Well, I got back!”

Tickets went on sale to the general public on Feb. 25 here.

The legendary performer will turn 80 on June 18. He’s kept active during the Covid-19 pandemic with a best-selling book, The Lyrics, as well as another children’s book. He also released a new solo album, McCartney III, in December 2020. His 1969 self has been highly visible with the Nov. 2021 release of The Beatles: Get Back, Peter Jackson’s docu-series of the filming of the band’s recording sessions and legendary performance on the rooftop of their Apple Corps Ltd. building in London.

McCartney was due to perform European dates in 2020, including the headlining performance at the Glastonbury Festival. He routinely performed a 38-song set of songs from The Beatles, Wings and his solo career during his 2019 tour.
