Legendary 1986 Queen Budapest Concert Gets Upgraded 40th Anniversary Release

Queen’s legendary 1986 concert in Budapest is getting a significant upgrade for its 40th anniversary. A film of the Népstadion performance, remastered in 4K with a brand new audio mix, will be in theaters and IMAX on October 7, 2026. Ticket information is forthcoming. The film screening will be followed by the Budapest audio release on Oct. 30, as 2-CDs and 3-LP editions, via Legacy Recordings. From the July 28 announcement: On July 27, 1986, Queen performed the largest-ever stadium concert in Budapest in front of 80,000 fans at the Népstadion. An estimated 45,000 people listened to the group outside the venue.) The concert was part of the famed “Magic” tour, which was the last time the band toured with Freddie Mercury.
With three years to go before the fall of the Berlin Wall, this was the first Western rock concert performed in a stadium behind the then-Iron Curtain. It was of such significance to the Hungarian authorities and film industry that a group of the country’s top film cameramen and technicians were brought together to film it for posterity.
With the scale of the achievement, it would have been impossible to imagine that Queen would go on to play only a further five shows, ending forever their touring days with Mercury only one month later, with their final show played at Knebworth Park in England on August 9.
The release includes newly remixed audio from the original multitrack recordings which delivers the most immersive presentation of the performance to date.
