Music fans looking for a double-barreled blast of live classic blues-rock this year won’t do much better than this. The “tres hombres” from Texas are teaming up with the solo Allman brother for 19 shows together that include the Top joining Allman at his Laid Back Fest date at Denver’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre on September 25th.
ZZ Top have maintained a fairly regular presence on the road since the 2012 release of their 15th studio album, La Futura, produced by Rick Rubin. Since issuing their aptly-titled ZZ Top’s First Album in 1971, the band first built their career to the success of their 1976 to ’77 Worldwide Texas Tour – one of classic rock’s most elaborately-staged and highest-grossing tours up to then. The trio then took a two-year hiatus before returning with a new look – long beards on guitarist Billy Gibbons and bass player Dusty Hill – and clever videos that helped them score such hits as “Legs,” “Sleeping Bag” and “Gimme All Your Lovin'” during the MTV-dominated 1980s. Banger Films is at work on a feature documentary on the band and recently issued a call for fans to contribute vintage footage of the trio.

Gregg Allman resurrected The Allman Brothers to prime artistic heights over the last two decades before they disbanded in 2014 (at least for a while). His recent solo career has been garnering him acclaim with 2011’s Low Country Blues and last year’s live CD/DVD Back to Macon, GA. He recently began cutting a new album with producer Don Was in the southern recording mecca of Muscle Shoals, AL (see our news item here).
