Santana Cancels European Tour Dates: Health Concerns

Carlos Santana has announced the cancellation of the spring European dates of his Miraculous 2020 world tour, which had been scheduled to begin next week. The March 10 announcement cited “public health concerns and European travel and performance restrictions.”

“Many countries have made the decision to restrict public gatherings in excess of 1,000 people to curb the potential spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19). While we deeply regret this unfortunate circumstance, the safety of our fans is the main priority for the Santana Organization. We will keep you all informed of new performance dates as they are made, and will make every effort to return to Europe soon,” said Michael Vrionis, President of Universal Tone Management.

On Feb. 25, Santana announced nearly three dozen North American shows, beginning June 19, where they will be supported by the powerhouse R&B institution Earth, Wind & Fire. Those dates mark the first time that the two bands have toured together.

The tour will make stops in Los Angeles, Dallas, New York, Chicago, Toronto, and more before wrapping August 29 in Tampa. (Tickets are available here and here.)

The “Miraculous Supernatural” tour will commemorate two very important milestones in the guitarist’s career: the 20th anniversary of his groundbreaking, multiple Grammy-winning album Supernatural and the 50th anniversary of 1970 album Abraxas.

Says a press release, “While Santana will highlight songs from both his Supernatural and Woodstock eras on the Miraculous 2020 World Tour, he will also feature what he calls ‘the new hymns and songs of tomorrow.’ The band (which also features Santana’s wife, Cindy Blackman Santana, on drums) will also perform energy-infused songs from Santana’s 2019 album Africa Speaks, produced by maverick hitmaker Rick Rubin.”

Says Carlos Santana in the tour press release, “When you come to a Santana concert, the miraculous happens. Miraculous means, transforming darkness into delight. I feel like a 20-year-old on stage playing with this band, and they deliver high energy on every song. When we hit the stage, we know we will touch your heart and make you dance, sing, cry, laugh and leave your baggage behind. Our vision-mission is designed to elevate, transform and illumine consciousness to make you want to embrace your own light and allow for miracles and blessings to flow from your own heart.”

Well, maybe the first in a long time…Santana toured Britain with Earth Wind and Fire in 1975 – I know because I saw them at the Glasgow Apollo, and met Carlos afterwards at a CBS post-concert party with both bands.
