Justin Hayward, City Winery, NYC, August 16, 2018
Legendary singer-songwriter and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Justin Hayward has added dates to his 2025 “Blue World” Tour of the U.S., Canada and U.K. Joining Hayward are band members Mike Dawes, Julie Ragins and Karmen Gould. Tickets are available here.
Hayward, who turned 78 last October 14, is best known as the vocalist, lead guitarist and composer for the Moody Blues, whose songs include “Nights in White Satin,” “Tuesday Afternoon,” “Question,” and “I Know You’re Out There Somewhere” plus other classic rock and genre-defining hits.
On March 14, he released a new recording, made with singer-songwriter, producer and conductor Mike Batt, a vocal and orchestral rendition of “Life In A Northern Town” – released almost exactly 40 years after the Dream Academy original.
“Mike and I have known each other since we were young,” Hayward says. “I always loved the atmosphere and mood he [creates]. Last year we fixed a new recording session with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, with Haydn Bendall engineering. ‘Life in a Northern Town’ [is] a song… that was at the top of both our lists of favorites.”
Adds Batt: “Vocally, this single is basically Justin singing the verses and me singing the choruses. The absence of a rhythm section gives more space for the voice to occupy. It also means the arrangement isn’t obscured, so you can hear the inner orchestral parts. I do think there’s a chemistry we tap into when we work together. I think it’s just because we’ve known each other so long, and we’re musically comfortable together.” The pair had previously collaborated on the Classic Blue album with the LPO.
The new release’s b-side is a new live recording of a Moody Blues song.
Hayward joined the Moody Blues in 1966. They have sold a reported 70 million albums worldwide and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. The band’s recordings are available in the U.S. here and in the U.K. here. Some of Hayward’s solo albums are available here.
