Day two of the Classic West on Sunday, July 16, wasn’t just about Fleetwood Mac‘s return to the concert stage. The evening began with two big-name bands, treating the Dodger Stadium audience to abbreviated sets packed with plenty of hits.
Earth, Wind & Fire opened their L.A. show with “Shining Star,” their 1975 #1 hit, and continued with a well-received set that included all of their other top 10 hits, among them “September,” “Sing a Song,” “Boogie Wonderland,” “After the Love Has Gone,” “Let’s Groove” (see video below) and their cover of the Beatles’ “Got to Get You Into My Life.” Their Classic West appearance was the band’s highest-profile gig since the February 2016 death of founder Maurice White.
The evening’s middle act, Journey, has had quite a 2017. In April, they were among several acts that joined other rock legends in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The San Francisco band, which had sold tens of millions of albums and filled concert arenas all over the world, had been overlooked for decades before their name was finally called for induction into the Class of 2017. They, too, dipped into their catalog of hits for their set, opening with the top 10 “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” and performing radio-friendly hits such as “Who’s Crying Now,” “Open Arms,” “Any Way You Want It,” “Be Good to Yourself” and, of course, the 1981 hit that has become their signature, “Don’t Stop Believin’.”
Neal Schon referenced the band’s former lead singer when he introduced “Lights,” which Schon co-wrote with Steve Perry. “I’m dedicating this to Steve Perry tonight.” (Watch it below.)
