When the Traveling Wilburys released their 1988 debut on a largely unsuspecting public, the album was an instant success. No surprise, given the pedigree of its members, five of classic rock’s greatest performers and frequent collaborators — George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. The friends took turns on lead vocals, often on the same song. Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 sold millions of copies and yielded several rock radio hits, in particular “Handle With Care” and “End of the Line.” The album won a Grammy® for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group. Sadly, Orbison died less than two months after the album’s release.
Two years later, the remaining four released a follow-up, calling it Vol. 3 (“It was George’s idea. He said ‘Let’s confuse the buggers,'” Lynne told a reporter at the time). This one had two radio hits, “She’s My Baby” and “Inside Out.” The album was dedicated to Orbison.
Long out of print, the Traveling Wilburys Collection box set has just been re-released as a 2-CD 1-DVD package from Concord Bicycle Music and Best Classic Bands has a copy to give away to one lucky reader. (The collection is also available as a deluxe 180-gram 3-LP vinyl box and for the first time as high-resolution downloads.) The release includes albums (Vol. 1 and Vol. 3), bonus tracks and a DVD featuring footage of the band from the first chord to the final mix.
