Tributes have been pouring in for Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick, who died on October 2, 2018, of a heart attack.
Emerick also engineered several of Paul McCartney’s albums, including Wings’ 1973 Band on the Run, for which he earned a Grammy Award. On October 3, McCartney posted a tribute to the man he called a “genius,” on his Facebook page:
Woke up this morning to the sad news of Geoff Emerick’s passing. He was a great engineer and friend, and even though The Beatles had many great engineers over the years Geoff was the ONE. He was smart, fun-loving and the genius behind many of the great sounds on our records. I worked with him after The Beatles and it was always fun and the sounds he managed to conjure up were always special. Having seen him earlier this year when he came round to our studio I’m shocked and saddened to have lost such a special friend. God bless you Geoffrey – love Paul. x
Ringo Starr shared his thoughts of Emerick on Facebook: “I am so sorry and shocked to hear about Geoff Emerick. He was a great engineer, very helpful to all of us in the studio. With him and George Martin they helped us to step up on Revolver. He will be missed. Barbara and I send peace and our love to his family. Peace & love, Ringoxxx”
Beatles reissue producer Giles Martin, son of George Martin, wrote: “RIP Geoff Emerick, one of the finest and most innovative engineers to have graced a recording studio. I grew up with him as he worked so much with my father. We have all been touched by the sounds he helped create on the greatest music ever recorded.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Geoff Emerick, who has sadly passed. Geoff’s work as audio engineer on their music was integral, resulting in multiple highly deserved Grammy Awards. pic.twitter.com/PWKO5i2EIc

Such sad news.
Geoff told me once that working at Abbey Road might mean a morning recording Otto Klemperer, Judy Garland in the afternoon or The Beatles until the small hours. Nothing could confound him.
How fortunate to have known and worked with him. I will miss him greatly.— Elvis Costello (@ElvisCostello) October 3, 2018
