Elvis Presley Dr NickElvis Presley’s long-time physician, George Nichopoulos, has died at 88 in Memphis. “Dr. Nick,” as he was known, was charged in 1979 with “illegally and indiscriminately” prescribing the star with over 12,000 pills for nearly two years prior to Presley’s 1977 death.

Nichopoulos died on February 24th. A Memphis funeral home has posted a brief obituary and tribute page. Comments include this from “Charles”: “RIP Dr Nick , you were a great man , who did many , many wonderful things in life!!! It was an honor to read your book!! I’m better for doing so !!! I’m sure Elvis met you in heaven with open arms!!!”

Nichopoulos was acquitted – as he was on two subsequent occasions – though he was ultimately stripped of his medical license in 1995.

The physician first started treating Presley in 1967 when the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll was just 32. By 1970, he worked for Presley full-time.

In a 2010 book, The King and Dr. Nick, Nichopoulos claimed that Presley died from chronic constipation.
