Critically acclaimed Broadway musical A Night With Janis Joplin is hitting the road this summer. As you may already surmise from the title of the production – it’s guaranteed to rock.
Joplin exploded onto the music scene with her debut album with Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1967. It’s hard to believe that the legendary singer was with us for just three years after that until her untimely death from a heroin overdose in 1970. Joplin’s unmistakable voice lives on in signature tunes like “Piece of My Heart,” “Cry Baby,” and “Me and Bobby McGee.”
Joplin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and posthumously given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.
A Night With Janis Joplin celebrates not just Joplin and her famous songs (though, rest assured, that it does and mightily) but also her biggest musical influences, via fanciful interludes from Aretha Franklin and Etta James to Nina Simone and Bessie Smith. Cleveland native Mary Bridget Davies cut her teeth singing blues jams with variety of rock bands before winning the lead role in a touring production of Love, Janis. She received a Tony nomination for her portrayal of the rock’n’roll queen after A Night With Janis Joplin first premiered on Broadway in 2013.
