As we said in our article, â1971âThe Year in 50 Classic Rock Albums,â the 1960s was definitely over. By â71, several movements that had only been hinted at during the â60sâheavy metal, the singer-songwriter boom, prog and art-rock, etc.âwere beginning to emerge as serious forces, and while most of the great artists of the â60s were still going strong, new names were starting to dominate.
In this timeline, youâll still see many familiar artists that â60s rock fans had lovedâthe Beatles were still prolific (albeit now individuallyâthey split in 1970); the Stones, the Who, Pink Floyd, Jefferson Airplane, the Beach Boys and Stevie Wonder were keeping busy, as were Dylan, the Kinks, Marvin Gaye and plenty of others.

Individually and collectively, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young were all over the charts when Atlantic Records placed this ad in the July 10, 1971 issue of Record World.
The members of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young were active individually and collectively among 1971 music highlights.
But added to those established names were some weâd not known in the previous decade: David Bowie, Elton John, Billy Joel and the Electric Light Orchestra were just a few of those whoâd soon become household names to rock fans.
Itâs always fun to look back with the benefit of hindsight and remember what our ears were taking in. Thatâs exactly what weâve done here: Weâve turned back the clock 50 years and compiled a timeline of the yearâs top events (including album releases) in rock music. Then weâve listed the bands that formed during that year, and those that called it quits.
Finally, weâve compiled a list of the yearâs top singles. Looking at it all now, we have to admit that we were all very lucky to have this music in our livesâand we still are!

Jump into a conversationAmazing to look at those lists. Look at 2020’s list and you’ll know, without question, that you lived within a true renaissance of music. Those of us who grew up in those years are so incredibly lucky. Great music, cheap ticket prices and no dancers on stage, just real musicians making the greatest music ever made. What a year in music 1971 was. Truly incredible.
So many great record from that year! I’d also like to add Lindisfarne’s ‘Fog on the Tyne,’ and I need to also mention the U.S. release of Elton John’s ‘Tumbleweed Connection’ (January 4, 1971).
lindisfarne!! heard the lady eleanor do not remember them..but older relatives had the records..it picked me up and took me away!..there is an untapped wealth of late 60’s early 70’s music i am just uncovering..amazing!
A blast from the past for sure! just look at ALL that music
AMEN, THE BEST DAYS OF PURE ROCK AND ROLL.
