Steve Van Zandt was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame on Sunday night, May 6) by his boss. And none other than his boss, Bruce Springsteen, did the honors for the longtime E Street Band guitarist. It all took place at the historic Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park.

In his remarks, Springsteen said: “Baptized at 13 in the holy spirit of the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, the Stones on Hollywood Palace, Steve’s vocation – rock and roll – chose him early.

“Steve’s service playing, singing, producing as my irreplaceable lieutenant. Steve is one of the greatest, living white soul performers we have.”

The Boss went on to recite Van Zandt’s many accomplishments outside of the E Street Band including organizing the anti-apartheid project, “Sun City,” his work with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, leading his own band, the Disciples of Soul, and his acting role as Silvio Dante on The Sopranos.

Afterwards, the pair sang “I Don’t Want to Go Home,” which Van Zandt wrote and produced for Southside Johnny.

Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul, led by Steve Van Zandt, are celebrating this Sunday’s start of their new tour with the surprise release of Soulfire Live!, a 24-track collection recorded last year in North America and Europe during the band’s first tour in nearly two decades, Soulfire Live! is available now at digital music retailers and streaming services; physical 3-CD, Blu-ray and vinyl editions will arrive this summer.

Soulfire Live! is described in a press release as “an epic and electrifying journey through rock ’n’ roll history led by one of its most passionate practitioners, showcasing Stevie Van Zandt’s limitless knowledge, talent, and sheer love for the genre in all its many shapes and guises.”

Among the album’s highlights is the introduction made by Mike Stoller, who along with partner Jerry Leiber, is one of the first successful rock songwriters and producers. Other highlights on the album are the original songs from throughout Little Steven’s illustrious career, including classics like “Standing in the Line of Fire” and “I Don’t Want To Go Home,” alongside a number of favorite cover versions like the Electric Flag’s “Groovin’ Is Easy,” Etta James’ “Blues Is My Business” and James Brown’s “Down and Out in New York City,” the latter two songs also featured on last year’s Soulfire album.

At each stop of the tour, TeachRock will host workshops before the show to educate teachers on how to implement music education into their curriculum.
“This tour is a celebration of the teaching profession,” says Van Zandt in the press release. “It’s a show of solidarity for the most underpaid, underappreciated working class in our country.”

The dates begin April 29, at New Brunswick, N.J.’s State Theatre and then continue in May.  Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul will also spend much of the summer traversing Europe, including headline shows and eagerly awaited festival performances in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Ireland and Norway.

Little Steven is a little ignorant when it comes to Leonard Peltier, a guilty unrepentant cop killer who refuses to cooperate in the murder investigation of Anna Mae Pictou Aquash.
