Earl & the Agitators’ Scott Holt, Bryan Bassett and Roger Earl

Earl & the Agitators All Star Band, a Foghat spinoff, released a new album, Shaken & Stirred, on October 26. The band is the brain child of Foghat founding member/drummer Roger Earl, singer/guitarist Scott Holt (a 10-year Buddy Guy alumnus) and Foghat lead/slide guitarist Bryan Bassett. The announcement describes their music as “rock ‘n’ roll, blues and a dash of country.”

Rounding out the Earl & the Agitators line-up for the album’s live bonus tracks are Foghat bassist Rodney O’Quinn, guitarist Tony Bullard and percussionist Mark Petrocelli. Foghat, the blues boogie band, had a string of hit albums throughout the ’70s, and earned radio success with such classic rock hits as “Slow Ride,” “Fool For the City” and their live cover of “I Just Want to Make Love to You.”

“This band was born out of a passion for American music: rock, blues and country,” explains Earl. “Scott channels this music with a joy and mastery of a seasoned pro. We had a blast writing and recording! And since we are all big Johnny Cash fans we also included a couple of his songs for fun.”

“So, you’re in a band and you have some friends that are in another band,” adds Holt. “You get together and hang out, writing and recording music. You share a love for old rock ‘n’ roll, blues and country [and have] so much fun that you give it a name and even take it onstage. The recipe is simple; take your Chess and Sun 45’s, throw them in a blender with a dollop of thundering drums, thumping bass and searing electric guitars.”

“When you meet someone that you just hit it off with, both as a friend and as a musical collaborator, special things happen,” says Bassett. “And so it was when I met Scott. Roger and I have been comrades in arms for many years and now we had all these songs recorded and ready to go.”

I didn’t expect to read anything new about “The Hat”, but it’s good to know that they’re still making music. I saw them in the mid 70’s in Jacksonville. Other shows included The Climax Blues Band and Wishbone Ash, which was the best of the 3, at least based on what I like to hear. The only 70’s UK band that was sorta in a similar genre that I didn’t see was Savoy Brown…
