A double bill that promises to be one of the must-see tours of the fall has been announced: Bob Dylan will hit the road with the great R&B/gospel singer Mavis Staples opening for him. (Dylan will also play two shows just prior to their joint tour.)
And on Oct. 9, Dylan revealed a five-night residency at NYC’s Beacon Theatre. A pre-sale for those dates begins Oct. 11.

For Staples, the tour will support a brand new album, If All I Was Was Black, to be released November 17 from the Anti- label. The album, produced by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, is described in a press release as “10 songs about contemporary America today, a present day filled with ghosts of the past.” Staples says, in the release, “Nothing has changed. We are still in it.”
Tweedy adds, “I’ve always thought of art as a political statement in and of itself—that it was enough to be on the side of creation and not destruction. But there is something that feels complicit at this moment in time about not facing what is happening in this country head on.”
