When Eddie Money and Wife, Laurie, Renewed Their Wedding Vows
by Best Classic Bands StaffA special edition of AXS TV’s original reality series, Real Money, aired October 10, 2019. The heartfelt episode captured classic rock legend Eddie Money and his wife, Laurie, as they renewed their wedding vows in an intimate ceremony joined by their five children. The series followed the daily lives of the family, both at home and on the road.
The vow renewal—which took place in early February of that year at their church—was something the couple had wanted to do for several years. Following his diagnosis with esophageal cancer in 2018 (“I thought I was just going in to get a checkup”), they knew the time was right. “Eddie and I felt strongly about getting married in the eyes of God, and his illness prompted us to stop putting it off,” Laurie said. “This ceremony meant more to both of us than the original, since we knew exactly what the words meant that we were saying to each other because we’d already lived it.”
The memorable episode gave viewers a firsthand glimpse into the emotional day, capturing the couple’s enduring love for each other and serving as a powerful tribute to Eddie, who died on September 13, 2019. “[I’m celebrating] my faith and my love for Jesus Christ, and how well he’s taken care of my family,” he explained.
“Looking into her eyes and having Pastor Brad marry me in the church, it’s just a real thrill. I tell ya, 30 years with my wife are the 30 best years of my life.”
The couple were joined at the altar with their four sons and daughter. The clip is available here.
Money scored such chart hits as “Baby Hold On,” Two Tickets to Paradise” and “Take Me Home Tonight.” It wasn’t publicly known that Money had developed esophageal cancer until August 24.

The cancer diagnosis was detailed in a special episode of Real Money that aired on September 12. Money also had a heart valve procedure that June. The heart issue was a condition unrelated to his cancer. On May 28, he announced that he would be taking time off after his doctors recommended the minimally invasive procedure after Money began to experience shortness of breath. The doctors preferred the surgery be completed the previous week, however Money did not want to cancel his two scheduled Memorial Day weekend shows. The procedure took place while Money had a break in his concert dates.
Born Edward Mahoney in New York on March 21, 1949, Money dropped out of the New York Police Academy in the ’70s to pursue a career in music. His biggest-ever hit was a duet with Ronnie Spector of the Ronettes, “Take Me Home Tonight,” which reached #4 in 1986.
