Following on the heels of the successful NBC broadcast of Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, which was seen by more than 9.6 million viewers, a new national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s musical has been announced for 2019 launch.

Details on venues and dates for the Jesus Christ Superstar tour have yet to be disclosed, but a report in Broadway.com states that the tour will cover 50 cities beginning in the fall of next year.

Superstar speaks to both theater audiences and concert music fans. This production pays tribute to the historic 1971 Billboard Album of the Year while creating a modern, theatrical world that is uniquely fresh and inspiring,” Stephen Gabriel, president of Work Light Productions, is quoted as saying in the article.

The announcement further says, “The Jesus Christ Superstar tour will be helmed by Timothy Sheader and choreographer Drew McOnie. The production will feature set and costume design by Tom Scutt, lighting design by Lee Curran and music supervision by Tom Deering. Full creative team, casting and cities will be announced at a later date.”

A website has been set up to give promoters the opportunity to present the show in their venue. That page describes the show as follows:

“What’s the buzz? The first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage, Jesus Christ Superstar has wowed audiences for over 40 years. A timeless work, the rock opera is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.

From the NBC production of Jesus Christ Superstar Live

“Loosely based on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Superstar follows the last week of Jesus Christ’s life. The story, told entirely through song, explores the personal relationships and struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, his followers and the Roman Empire.

“The iconic 1970s rock score contains such well-known numbers as ‘Superstar,’ ‘I Don’t Know How to Love Him’ and ‘Gethsemane.’ A true global phenomenon and perfect pick for schools, community theatres and professionals alike, Superstar continues to touch new generations of audiences and performers.”
