The family of the late Jerry Garcia, in partnership with the archival media management platform Starchive and project coordinator Christopher McCutcheon, have announced plans for the establishment of the Jerry Garcia Music Arts Center in the San Francisco Bay Area, through Jerry Garcia Music Arts, according to a press release.

“Conceived as far more than a conventional museum, the envisioned institution is designed as an active, living cultural center, preservation space, and creative hub,” says the announcement. “Dedicated to preserving and advancing the multifaceted legacy of the Grateful Dead co-founder, the facility will showcase Garcia’s expansive musical catalog, fine art, community ethos and enduring impact spanning the 1960s counterculture through today.”

For several years, it continues, “Jerry Garcia’s family and Jerry Garcia Music Arts have explored meaningful avenues to share the rich catalog of historical and artistic materials carefully preserved within Starchive. Following the announcement of the Eyes of the World immersive experience project this past August, widespread enthusiasm and community interest served as the catalyst to formalize plans for this dedicated, permanent archival home in the Bay Area.

“Reflecting Jerry Garcia’s spirit of family and community, all Garcia family heirs are warmly welcomed to participate and share their personal family content, archival materials, and special mementos to be preserved and celebrated within the collection.”

The center, it says, will feature a community-oriented, fan-accessible research library and physical archive housing rare memorabilia and historical artifacts, complemented by a modern digital preservation hub. To cultivate ongoing public participation, the center will also review and accept fan-donated materials.

Continues the release, “Beyond Garcia’s visual art and recordings, exhibitions will trace the diverse musical traditions that shaped his artistic journey-including Americana, blues, rock, gospel, jazz, country, folk and world music. Galleries will also highlight landmark technological innovations pioneered by Garcia and his collaborators, notably historical innovations in live concert sound design.”

Comprehensive plans for the facility encompass a state-of-the-art performance center and screening room for live music and film presentations, alongside special exhibition galleries dedicated to Garcia’s fine art and instruments. The center will also host an Artist-in-Residence program supporting emerging and established creators in the recording and visual arts, accompanied by interactive environmental exhibits spotlighting Garcia’s dedication to conservation-specifically his advocacy for coral reefs and rainforest preservation-supported by integrated charitable initiatives benefiting ocean preservation, music education, and the arts.

Additional announcements regarding architectural design, programming, and scheduled developments will follow as the project progresses. The current announcement did not indicate exactly where or when the center will be built.
