For the recent 10th anniversary of Record Store Day on April 22, Rhino/Parlophone released a limited edition David Bowie album, Cracked Actor (Live Los Angeles ’74) as a 3-LP set.
The album was reportedly RSD 2017’s top-seller. As a result, Cracked Actor is now being made available on June 16 as a limited edition 2-CD digipak, with a 12-page booklet featuring notes from the original LA Amphitheatre show program and a piece about the LA “Philly Dogs” shows in Rolling Stone, from October 10, 1974. Neither of these were featured in the vinyl package. (Pre-order is available here.)
A standard jewel case 2-CD will then replace the limited digipak. The vinyl edition will not be re-pressed or re-released.
The RSD vinyl collection was the first official release of this Philly Dogs Tour show from September 1974, some of which was featured in the BBC documentary, Cracked Actor. The full concert was documented on the triple vinyl five-sided album, and is on the new 2-CD version.
All of the multi-track tapes were finally reunited in one place in November of last year and mixed officially for the first time by long time Bowie collaborator Tony Visconti. The packaging features newly commissioned artwork with rare and unseen photographs from the 1974 Universal Amphitheatre show by Terry O’Neill and Jamie Andrews in a gatefold sleeve.
The album differs greatly from Bowie’s David Live album (also from 1974), as it features a new band lineup including soul legend Luther Vandross on vocals. It also has a different set list including two tracks that had just been recorded for the album The Gouster, which was finally released for the first time last year as part of the Who Can I Be Now? box set. (Details here.)
