A film about Ann Wilson is being released on DVD later this year. The Heart singer is said to have given filmmaker Criss Cain “exclusive access to her home, rehearsal studio, tour bus and dressing room, in hopes of producing an authentic concert film.” The documentary about one of the greatest female singers in all of classic rock, Ann Wilson / In Focus: A Concert Film, doesn’t have a precise release date yet. But a series of clips with songs and brief interviews have been issued over the past several months.

The performer released an extended seven-minute clip on July 21 which features a live version of the Heart hit “What About Love.” The group’s 1985 cover of the song reached #10 in the U.S., their first Top 10 single in five years.

In the film, Wilson is asked what made the song stick. “The lyrics are dramatically simple. But they’re meaningful. It’s just saying ‘You’ve got a hole in your life. Are you gonna let love in?”

Earlier this year, a clip from the film featuring Wilson’s cover of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” was released.

Says Wilson: “‘For What It’s Worth’ is probably more relevant now than when it was written. It’s a song about not being aware of what’s really going on. Of being lulled into into sleep by a type of pop culture by the cover-ups of politics… It’s just saying ‘Hey, wake up, you know? No one’s doing this to you. We’re just not looking at what’s going on. Wake up and look [at] what’s going on. You’re not a victim. You’re part of the cause.”

In May, Wilson’s performance of The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again” was released. “It’s just talking about, during the last election, how both sides were equally engaging in the same kinds of weirdness. ‘Here’s the new boss; same as the old boss.’ It’s the game that never changes. The game is what’s broken.”

Wilson and her sister Nancy Wilson are taking a break from Heart this year. (Nancy’s current project, Roadcase Royale, are opening for Bob Seger on his arena tour this fall.)
