Neil Young New Box Sets: 9 Albums from the ’70s

As we reported earlier this month, Neil Young‘s catalog is being reinvigorated. Now we learn that it’s even more extensive than what we originally shared. Reprise Records will release nine Neil Young albums from the 1970s on both CD and vinyl. The first of two CD boxed sets, Original Release Series 5-8, comprises four titles: Time Fades Away, On the Beach, Tonight’s the Night and Zuma, and is limited to 3,000 sets that are available now.

The second CD box, Original Release Series 8.5-12, continues chronologically with Young’s next four subsequent titles: Long May You Run, American Stars ’N’ Bars, Comes a Time, Rust Never Sleeps and Live Rust, and is limited to 3,000 sets. These four albums are also released individually on vinyl and are available now.

All of these albums from Young’s mid-’70s period have been out of print for years. Each title has been remastered from the original analog master studio recordings at Bernie Grundman Mastering, working with John Hanlon of Young’s production team and approved by Young. The Original Release Series features historically accurate, faithful reproductions of the original album artwork.

The new releases follow an announcement by Young earlier this month that he would start posting his entire recorded output—going all the way back to his debut single with the Squires, from 1963—in a new online archive. The new website,, shows an “Opening Soon” graphic and includes a notice from Young. “Welcome to NYA, the home of my music,” it begins. Young then goes on to explain, “I must admit I built this for myself as much as everyone else. I am very interested in collecting and organization, as well as mechanical things and old school record-keeping.”

In addition, Young recently announced the September release of Hitchhiker, a “lost” live-in-the-studio album from 1976. Plus, Young’s Decade compilation was reissued in June in a 3-LP vinyl package.
