In 2016, The Monkees and their fans celebrated the group’s 50th anniversary with a tour that featured Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork, and a slew of recordings, including their first new studio album in 20 years. Good Times! featured new music from Dolenz, Tork and Michael Nesmith, as well as the late Davy Jones (from an unreleased song cut several years earlier), and was well-received by critics (including Best Classic Bands here).

Nesmith sat out that anniversary tour to work on his memoir, Infinite Tuesday and its companion album, but joined Dolenz and Tork for several performances, including one via Skype and another on Sept. 16 in Los Angeles.

Dolenz, now 72, has spent much of 2017 touring on his own and was joined on many dates by Mark Lindsay, the former frontman of ’60s sensations Paul Revere & the Raiders. (If you knew that the early Monkees hit, “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone,” was first recorded by the Raiders, raise your hand.)

As his 2017 solo tour wound down, Dolenz played two Southern California dates: Oct. 20 in Agoura Hills and Oct. 21 in Beverly Hills. He was joined both nights by Nesmith for several songs.

At the latter date… a surprise guest: Kiefo Nilsson, who sang “Good Times,” the title track from the Monkees’ 2016 LP, written by none other than Dolenz pal, Harry Nilsson.
