Metallica’s 1991 self-titled album (aka the Black Album), the band’s fifth studio effort, is receiving several 30th Anniversary editions including a massive Limited Edition Deluxe Box on September 10, 2021, as well as a Oct. 1 tribute album that features 53 performances of the original release’s 12 songs from a broad range of artists. The various versions arrive via the band’s Blackened Recordings.
The Black Album was originally released on Elektra Records on August 12, 1991, nearly three years after …And Justice For All. It reached #1 in ten countries including four weeks in the U.S., the band’s first to top the chart. Metallica yielded five singles, led by “Enter Sandman” (which reached #16 on the Hot 100), “The Unforgiven” (#35) and “Nothing Else Matters” (#34). It’s been certified 16x Platinum in the U.S.
