According to multiple online news reports, rock great Tom Petty has been found unconscious at his Malibu, Calif., home and rushed to a hospital in Santa Monica last night (Oct. 1). Petty, 66, was apparently not breathing and in full cardiac arrest.
Petty’s condition was listed as critical at the UCLA Santa Monica Hospital. According to a tweet from TMZ at 12:26 p.m. PT, Petty “a decision was made to pull life support.”
However, many of the reports of Petty’s passing were apparently based on erroneous news. While the musician was reportedly taken off life support, the LAPD issued a series of tweets at 4:55 p.m. to refute the reports of his death. (See below.)
Petty and the Heartbreakers just finished a 40th Anniversary tour at the Hollywood Bowl last Monday.
