The 4AD label will release Day of the Dead, a benefit celebration of the Grateful Dead’s music by over 60 artists from varied musical backgrounds, on May 20th. Among the rockers who contributed to it are Bruce Hornsby, Lucinda Williams, Jenny Lewis, Courtney Barnett, Mumford & Sons, Jim James (of My Morning Jacket), The Band’s Garth Hudson, The Flaming Lips and Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth. With an accent on rare collaborations, the set includes Dead guitarist Bob Weir performing “St. Stephen” live with Wilco and Dead bassist Phil Lesh on a live take of “I Know You Rider” with The National, whose Aaron and Bryce Dessner created and curated the project.
All profits will help fight for AIDS/ HIV and related health issues around the world through the Red Hot Organization. The compilation is a wide-ranging tribute to the songwriting and experimentalism of the Dead which took four years to record, features 59 tracks and is almost six hours long. Day of the Dead will be released digitally, on five CDs and as a limited-edition vinyl box set.
A Day of the Dead live performance will take place this summer at the second annual Eaux Claires Festival (August 12th-13th) featuring Hornsby, Lewis, Will Oldham, The National and other acts who appear on the set.
