The British music press originally came up with the term “shoegaze” to jeer at a new wave of introspective alt-rockers who stood still during live performances, staring down at effects pedals. It’s been nearly 30 years since then, and let’s just say that the name stuck. Noisy, dreamy and laden with obscured vocals and droning riffs, shoegaze had its prime in the late ’80s and early ’90s, fell off the map a bit in the wake of grunge, and then enjoyed a surge of renewed popularity in the 2000s in the form of “nu gaze.”
Plenty of outsiders have been celebrating the so-called Scene That Celebrates Itself for years now, but come January 29th, fans can get their hands on the ultimate box set chronicling the genre’s history – five discs packed full of tracks by Ride, Cocteau Twins, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Slowdive, the Flaming Lips, Chapterhouse, and more. The collection, titled Still in a Dream: A Story of Shoegaze 1988-1995, is named after a song by shoegaze pioneers My Bloody Valentine, who, oddly, are not featured themselves.
