TRUE_SADNESS-10X10-560x565The runaway popularity of the folk-rocking Avett Brothers shows no signs of slowing down. They have added 10 shows to their summer 2016 tour schedule (see below) that includes an impressive three-night stand at Denver’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre from July 28-30 with a different opener each night (successively, Nahko and Medicine for the People, Gary Clark Jr. and J Mascis). And the North Carolina-based foursome have announced the upcoming release of their latest and ninth studio album, True Sadness, on June 24th on American Recordings/Republic Records.

In a letter to fans on the band’s website, Seth Avett describes True Sadness as “a patchwork quilt, both thematically and stylistically. Wherein a myriad of contrasting fabrics make perfect sense on the same plane, this album draws upon countless resources from its writers and performers…. Sonically, the album is as multidimensional as its makers. The same could be said of its long list of influences. So the quilt is sewn, in part, with the brightly colored threads of Queen, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Jimmie Rodgers, Tom Petty, Nine Inch Nails, Gillian Welch, Aretha Franklin, Walt Disney, Pink Floyd, Kings of Convenience, calypso of the 1950s and country of the 1930s. Rock and roll is here, as always.” The four band members and the three players from their touring group all worked on the record.

It follows the release last December of Live, Vol. Four, recorded at PNC Arena in Raleigh, NC during their 2014 New Year’s Eve concert. The album introduced two brand new songs: “Satan Pulls The Strings,” and “Rejects in the Attic.”

The Avett Brothers have enjoyed a steady rise from the grassroots since 2003 as independent artists and then into the mainstream since 2008 when they began working with famed producer Rick Rubin and signed with his American Recordings label. They will follow their summer North American dates with a tour of Europe. Click here to purchase tickets.
