The King and Dr Nick bookElvis Presley’s long-time physician, George Nichopoulos, was charged on December 19, 1979 with “illegally and indiscriminately” prescribing the star with over 12,000 pills for nearly two years prior to his August 1977 death.

Nichopoulos was acquitted, as he was on two subsequent occasions, though he was ultimately stripped of his medical license in 1995.

The physician first started treating Presley in 1967 when the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll was just 32. By 1970, he worked for Presley full-time.

After he lost his right to practice medicine, he briefly served as Jerry Lee Lewis’ road manager.

In a 2010 book, The King and Dr. Nick, Nichopoulos claimed that Presley died from chronic constipation.

Nichopoulos died on February 24, 2016, at age 88 in Memphis, Tenn.
