When Phil Collins Opened His 1st U.S. Tour in 12 Years
by Best Classic Bands StaffOn May 7, 2018, Phil Collins revealed that his Not Dead Yet, Live tour would be coming to North America for the first time in 12 years. Five months later, the tour began October 5 in Sunrise, Fla., near Ft. Lauderdale. (The veteran musician began his comeback on June 2, 2017, in the U.K. but after just four dates, he suffered a serious fall in his London hotel room. Since then, he also did shows in Europe and South America, and then in Australia and New Zealand in 2019.)
Collins, born January 30, 1951, has had back surgery as well as hip issues in recent years and at this point drummed only sparingly. (He sat throughout most of these performances.) His band includes his son, Nic, on drums, as well as the veteran bassist Leland Sklar.
The Oct. 5 opening night setlist at the BB&T Center leaned leaning heavily on the musician’s extensive (and hugely successful) solo career–which earned him seven U.S. #1 singles–plus a handful of Genesis hits, among the evening’s 20 songs.

“About three or four hundred years ago, I was in a band called Genesis,” Collins said, to big applause. “We’re great friends, we just don’t work in the same office anymore.”
