Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and ten-time Grammy winner Bonnie Raitt‘s new album, Dig In Deep – her 20th – arrived February 26th via her own label, Redwing Records.
Her extensive 2016 tour begins March 10th and continues into the fall (see below). Last month, Raitt performed a well-received tribute honoring legendary blues artist B.B. King at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards with Chris Stapleton and Gary Clark Jr.
“I was really inspired to come up with some songs that went with grooves that I missed playing in my live show, and to dig deeper into some topics I hadn’t yet mined,” Raitt explained in a press release. “I don’t write easily and can get distracted, but remembering how satisfying it was to come up with something new of my own, and writing with guys I love – like my longtime bandmates George Marinelli and Jon Cleary – I found that once the wheels started turning, the music came pouring out.”
And pour out, it has. The 66-year-old blues singer penned five new tracks for her forthcoming record, and produced all except for one, which was pulled from the recording sessions for 2012’s Grammy-winning LP Slipstream (and was produced by Joe Henry).
Raitt had previously announced a slew of North American tour dates following the release of her next album (see below). The Dig In Deep Tour will feature her longtime band – James “Hutch” Hutchinson (bass), Ricky Fataar (drums) and George Marinelli (guitar) – as well as more recent addition Mike Finnigan (keyboards), who joined the line-up for her 2012-2013 tour to promote Slipstream. Five-piece funk, gospel and Delta blues ensemble the California Honeydrops will open for Raitt, and are offering a free (yes, free) download of their current album, Honeydrops Live.
For every ticket purchased, one dollar will be donated to organizations devoted to sustainable energy, social justice, human rights, environmental protection and music education. Additional tour dates for 2016 are still to be announced.
