Update (March 25): Gilmour began his brief U.S. tour last evening with a 22-song set including Pink Floyd favorites like “Wish You Were Here,” “Money” and “Us and Them.” His occasional collaborator, David Crosby, joined him for several songs including the finale, “Comfortably Numb.” (See complete setlist and videos below.)

In the annals of numerous unique Pink Floyd undertakings, filming a show in 1971 in the Amphitheater of Pompeii – the ancient Roman city buried in volcanic ash in AD 79 – (with no audience) stands as a milestone, released the next year as a seminal concert documentary film. On July 7 and 8, 45 years later, the former Floyd guitarist Gilmour will return to Pompeii, Italy to perform live again.

This time it will be for an audience of about 2,000 people and in the nearby Roman Amphitheatre. On July 10 and 11, he will also perform in a first-century Roman amphitheatre in Verona, Italy. The dead city seems to be coming alive for rock music; Elton John is also slated to play Pompeii in July.

“I want to thank the [Italian] Ministry of Culture for giving me the opportunity to once again play this beautiful and historic venue,” Gilmour says. “Performing there in 1971 was very special and I’m looking forward to returning and hopefully creating some more memorable moments made even more special by playing to an audience.” Tickets for the Pompeii shows go on sale on March 22nd at 8 AM ET on his website.

Prior to that, Gilmour will hit North America next week to play a limited slate of 12 concerts that has expanded since we first announced the tour last July. Second shows and venues were added to what will be the classic rocker’s first American appearances in 10 years (see below). The tour follows last year’s release of his Rattle The Lock album.

He’ll also be performing in London later this year, first playing the 2016 Teenage Cancer Trust charity gig series, curated by Roger Daltrey, at London’s Royal Albert Hall, from April 19-24. Then in September Gilmour returns to that same famed venue for four concerts (25th and 28th to 30th).
