The Who Add 2 Club Dates to Celebrate Historic Leeds Concert
by Best Classic Bands StaffThe Who have announced two additional club dates to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their historic concert at Leeds University. The news of the acoustic concerts, to be held February 12, 2020, follow the near-instant sell-out of the original shows announced for Feb. 14. All are being held at a venue called Pryzm in Kingston-Upon-Thames, U.K., outside of London, which is miles away from the university where they famously performed exactly 50 years earlier, on February 14, 1970.
The Dec. 10 announcement of the original date noted that the performances will be their smallest live concerts in over 40 years. Tickets for the two new concerts, also priced at incredibly low rates, go on sale Dec. 12 at 11 a.m. local time. The venue shows admission is just £13.00. A ticket and a CD copy of The Who’s new album, WHO, is only £17.00. More info is available here.
The concerts are described as “never to be repeated intimate acoustic shows.” The venue opened in 2013 and appears to have a capacity of 2000, though it can’t be ascertained how many tickets are being made available for the Who concert.
The club dates are roughly one month before the band begins its 2020 U.K. tour. (See dates below.) The new album is poised to debut at #1 on the U.K. sales chart.
In 1970, The Who were at the peak of their powers after a triumphant U.S. tour that included their famed appearance at Woodstock. They’d recorded hundreds of hours of concerts for a live album. But the prospect of listening to and culling through them was simply too daunting to bear for Pete Townshend.
So the band booked two small venue dates to record: February 14 at Leeds University and the next night at Hull City Hall.
The space The Who played at Leeds was a dining hall, its “refectory,” partially curtained off, packed with some 2,000 people.
