‘School of Rock,’ Soon On B’way, Debuts 360° Music Vid

Andrew Lloyd Webber has just released a fully immersive 360° music video for “You’re in the Band,” a musical number from his upcoming Broadway show, School of Rock – The Musical. Shot in a real NYC classroom, the innovative video is one of the first to take advantage of new 360° technology and allows the viewer to navigate all angles of the classroom. The 360° video will accompany a new single of “You’re in the Band.”

At a news conference today (10/14) to preview the promotional clip, Lloyd Webber said, “One of the things about (doing this kind of video) is that it was inherently rather theatrical. You couldn’t obviously edit it because everything is staged and is all happening (live). It’s a one-take video; everything you see is done live. You have to stage not only for what’s going on behind you, in front of you, around you, but above you and below you.”

Lloyd Webber is best known as the composer of such long-running musicals as The Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. (He’s also an Emmy shy of being a member of the very exclusive EGOT club, having earned three Grammys, an Oscar and seven Tonys.)

School of Rock – The Musical begins preview performances at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre on November 9th, with an opening set for December 6th.

The musical is based on the 2003 film, directed by Richard Linklater and starring Jack Black in a career-defining performance. It went on to gross more than $130 million worldwide.

School of Rock – The Musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. Completely disinterested in academic work, Dewey decides to create his own curriculum, turning his class into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band.

Webber noted, “The whole thing about School of Rock is that it’s about kids and kids being empowered with music.”

Warner Bros. Records will release the Original Broadway Cast Recording on December 4th. The album will feature a new score by Lloyd Webber and lyricist Glenn Slater, along with three songs from the film.
