Update: The Who have added a number of European concert dates in late August into September beyond the four June festival shows the band announced back in March (see below). And with the end of of “The Who Hits 50!” tour on May 29th, the band has also given the 10 date run a name: The “Back To The Who” tour. With the group slated to perform at the Desert Trip classic rock festival in California on October 9th, it would seem that The Who’s insistence that they would be playing their final tour – and this isn’t the first time they’ve said that – was premature (not that we mind in the slightest).

Just a week or so after announcing that they will be headlining one of the four night’s at this year’s Isle of Wight festival – see Best Classic Bands‘ story here – we’ve learned that The Who have added several European dates to their tour schedule.

Following their June 11 performance at the Isle of Wight Festival, The Who will do a date in Toulouse, France and then festival appearances at the Mad Cow Mad Cool Festival in Madrid, Spain and the Azkena Rock Festival in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain.

The first leg of the band’s rescheduled Hits 50! tour ended yesterday and doesn’t resume until April 26, giving them roughly a month to catch their breath. Pete Townshend had caught a nasty cold and wasn’t at full strength; Roger Daltrey seems completely recuperated from the bout of viral meningitis that had caused them to postpone their tour last fall.

Here’s some incredible footage of Townshend from the fourth row at the Pepsi Center in Denver on March 29, which was the final date before their current break…

Townshend’s most recent comments on the classic rock band’s future regarding live performances – that we reported here – sounded quite definitive. “We might do occasional shows, but we won’t be touring again.” The massive undertaking of the current tour offers logistical sense then to do these European dates while the crew, musicians and equipment are all together.
