Paul McCartney returned to the concert stage on Wednesday (October 18, 2023) for his first concert of the year. The legend opened the new edition of his “Got Back” tour in Adelaide, Australia, his first of seven shows Down Under, with a 39-song set that spanned his Beatles, Wings and solo career.
McCartney launched the “Got Back” tour in February 2022, completing 16 shows across the U.S. before performing his final concert of that year at the Glastonbury festival in the U.K. on June 25. The setlist for the 2023 tour’s opening concert was almost identical to the ones he performed in 2022, with the notable addition of “She’s a Woman,” which he hadn’t played live since 2004.
“Let’s hear it for a long time ago,” said McCartney, as the band launched into “She’s a Woman.”
The 81 year-old announced the tour on July 31. It currently runs for 17 shows this year including dates in Mexico and Brazil. McCartney’s longtime band features Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray (bass/guitar), Rusty Anderson (guitar) and Abe Laboriel Jr (drums).
Twelve songs in came “Maybe I’m Amazed.”
He was last in Australia in December 2017.
Around halfway through, McCartney began playing that familiar jaunty piano from “Lady Madonna.”
Toward the end of the main set, the band performed an “explosive” “Live and Let Die.”
As he did on the 2022 edition of the tour, as McCartney opened the encores with “I Got a Feeling,” while “performing” a duet with John Lennon via film footage on the screen behind the stage.
