Watch: John Fogerty Celebrates Dr. John at Tribute Concert
by Best Classic Bands StaffNew Orleans icon Dr. John will be the focus of a new live tribute collection coming from Concord Records on October 14. The Musical Mojo of Dr. John: A Celebration of Mac & His Music, produced by Blackbird Presents (available for immediate pre-order now here), encompasses a two-CD, Blu-ray and DVD package along with a stand-alone two-CD version.
The Musical Mojo of Dr. John captures a concert at New Orleans’ Saenger Theatre, with Dr. John joined by a variety of guest artists, who perform 22 songs written, recorded and/or popularized by the artist during his six-decade career.
The performers include Bruce Springsteen, who duets with Dr. John on the 1973 hit “Right Place Wrong Time”; plus Jason Isbell, John Fogerty, Mavis Staples, Widespread Panic, Ryan Bingham, the late Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas, Terence Blanchard, John Boutté, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, George Porter Jr. and Zigaboo Modeliste of the Meters, and Aaron, Charles and Cyril Neville. Bassist Don Was served as the project’s musical director, leading a house band that also includes Allman Brothers Band/Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell, NOLA pianist John Gros, Funky Meters guitarist Brian Stoltz and drummer Kenny Aronoff, as well as Dr. John’s longstanding musical compatriot, trombonist Sarah Morrow.
Here’s John Fogerty performing “New Orleans”…
Dr. John was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011, and won the most recent of his six Grammy Awards in 2013 when Locked Down was voted that year’s Best Blues Album. He made his Concord debut in 2014 with Ske-Dat-De-Dat…The Spirit of Satch, a tribute to fellow New Orleanian Louis Armstrong.
