Jane Fonda has announced that she has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a form of cancer, and has started chemotherapy treatments. The 84-year-old actor and activist shared the news today (Sept. 2, 2022) on her Instagram account. “This is a very treatable cancer,” she wrote. “80% of people survive, so I feel very lucky.”

She added, “I’m also lucky because I have health insurance and access to the best doctors and treatments. I realize, and it’s painful, that I am privileged in this. Almost every family in America has had to deal with cancer at one time or another and far too many don’t have access to the quality health care I am receiving and this is not right.”

The two-time Academy Award-winning actress didn’t share when she was diagnosed. “I’m doing chemo for 6 months and am handling the treatments quite well,” she wrote. “Believe me, I will not let any of this interfere with my climate activism.”

The daughter of acclaimed actor Henry Fonda was born Dec. 21, 1937. She had her breakthrough as the title character in 1965’s Cat Ballou, opposite Lee Marvin who won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a dual role. Other roles in that decade included The Chase and Barefoot in the Park, both opposite Robert Redford, and the sci-fi spoof Barbarella.

Fonda earned her first Academy Award in the 1971 murder mystery Klute, where she played a high-priced call girl. She won her second Oscar for the war drama Coming Home, opposite Jon Voight. She also received nominations for her roles in Julia, The China Syndrome, On Golden Pond, opposite her father, and The Morning After.

Other pictures in her extensive filmography include 9 To 5, with Dolly Parton and Lily Tomlin, Comes a Horseman, again opposite Redford, and Agnes of God.

In 1982, she almost single-handedly started a new industry with the release of the first of many exercise videos, Jane Fonda’s Workout, said to be the top selling VHS tape of the twentieth century.

In 1991, she retired from acting when she married her third husband, media mogul Ted Turner. They divorced in 2001.
