When Gregg Allman walks out onto the stage of Morrison, Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre for his own Laid Back Festival this Sunday, September 25, he’ll be putting a lot of minds at ease. Allman has been sidelined since August 5, when his publicist announced that the 68-year-old Allman Brothers Band legend was experiencing “serious health issues” and was canceling all performances for the rest of the summer.

For Laid Back, Allman will perform an acoustic set with his lead guitarist and music director Scott Sharrard, prior to the set by fest headliners ZZ Top. The bill also includes the Richie Furay Band, Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band, Lucie Silvas, Levon and People’s Blues of Richmond.

“I just can’t wait to get back out there,” says Allman. “I’ve gotten so stir crazy these last few weeks. I feel best when I’m traveling and playing. That’s what keeps me going, and there’s no better place to start than Red Rocks.”

Following the Red Rocks show, Allman will take the festival to Atlanta (October 29), followed by a 10-date residency at New York’s City Winery. (Tickets are long since sold-out; try here.)

On August 5, Allman had abruptly postponed all touring due to what was described as “serious health issues” in an announcement from his publicist. The press release indicated that all shows, “starting with his appearance at Scranton, PA’s Peach Music Festival on August 12 and going through the Clearwater, FL Jazz Festival on October 16,” were off the table.

The August 5 announcement noted that Allman is “currently under his doctor’s care at the Mayo Clinic,” but did not give details regarding the nature of Allman’s illness. In a statement at the time, Allman said, “I want to thank my fans and friends for supporting me while I rest up and focus on getting better and back on the road as soon as I can. I’ve been working hard with my band, my pride and joy, to play our music for everyone. We’ll see y’all in October.”
