If it seems like everyone’s been teaming up with Jack White lately – well, you’re right. Beck, Chris Thile, Laura Marling, Tom Jones, Insane Clown Posse, and Stephen Colbert are just a few of the talented folks who’ve stopped by White’s Nashville studio to record songs for his Third Man Records Blue Series.
The latest to join the crowd is none other than wry Melbourne songstress Courtney Barnett, known for her deadpan sense of humor and witty, stream-of-consciousness lyrics. “Boxing Day Blues (revisited)” is the A-side, a bittersweet epilogue to the closing track of her debut album, and the B-side is a cover of the 1979 classic “Shivers” by Boys Next Door. (Quick music history lesson: this was the first incarnation of cult post-punk band The Birthday Party, fronted by Nick Cave.)
Just in case that’s not enough for your Barnett fix, she’ll be playing Madison Square Garden and the Hollywood Bowl this month opening for Blur, and a limited-issue deluxe edition of her debut album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, will be out November 6th on LP, as a box set and digitally. It’ll include previously unreleased live recordings at New York’s Electric Lady Studios, a poster of the album artwork, four Polaroids taken by Barnett, and her cover of John Cale’s “Close Watch.”
Check out “Shivers” below. You can hear the rest on October 16th, when the limited edition seven-inch vinyl 45 is officially released.
