We’re willing to bet we’re not the only classic rock fans with a soft spot for the Carpenters.
“We’ve Only Just Begun: Carpenters Remembered,” a celebration of the ’70s brother-and-sister duo of Richard and Karen Carpenter, will play in several U.S. cities this fall, to be followed by a Carpenters Christmas celebration in November and December.
“We’ve Only Just Begun: Carpenters Remembered” features singer Michelle Berting Brett, accompanied by a live, seven-piece Nashville band directed by Harry Sharpe. The show, according to a press release, “re-creates the Carpenters’ original sound, presenting an intimate behind-the-scenes portrait of one of the most successful recording acts of all time.”
Karen Carpenter died in 1983. During their brief career, the Carpenters enjoyed tremendous success with 11 Top 5 singles including the #1 pop hits “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” “Top of the World” and “Please Mr. Postman.” (Their signature song, “We’ve Only Just Begun,” peaked at #2.) They’ve sold a combined 100 million albums and singles.
“We’ve Only Just Begun: Carpenters Remembered” has played all over the U.S. in theaters and showrooms. According to the release, “It grew out of an idea Berting Brett, a farm girl from a musical family in Saskatchewan, conceived after being told repeatedly that she sounded like Karen Carpenter.” She and her now-husband, producer Mark Brett, created a one-woman show in 2009 based around the Carpenters’ music. The show played a small club in Toronto with Berting Brett accompanied only by a pianist.” It has since evolved into a touring production.
