Imagine the possibilities. First, Crosby, Stills and Nash became CSN&Y. A great addition even if we’ve lost count of how many times Neil Young left and returned. And, believe it or not, CSNY&J actually occurred. Welsh superstar Tom Jones singing “Long Time Gone” with the hippest band of the day: Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. The song is a David Crosby composition that appears on the self-titled Crosby, Stills and Nash album.
Roughly two months after the group’s performance at Woodstock, they appeared on the This Is Tom Jones TV series that ran from 1969-1971 on ABC in the U.S., during the height of variety TV series’ popularity. Lest we forget, Jones was a huge star at the time with a string of hits from 1965’s “It’s Not Unusual” and “What’s New, Pussycat?” through 1966’s “Green, Green Grass of Home” and 1967’s “Delilah.” In 1969, he was just 29 and at his commercial peak.
From the start, Jones takes the lead vocals, ably assisted by Stephen Stills with harmonies by Graham Nash and Crosby. Neil Young supplies a guitar solo. Not surprisingly, Jones displays some great dance moves.
Their collaboration on “Long Time Gone,” from Oct. 16, 1969, is Best Classic Bands’ Classic Video.
After playing at Woodstock in August 1969, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young spent the rest of the year touring and writing songs for what would become CSNY’s 1970 debut, Déjà Vu. A newly discovered multi-track recording of the band’s September 20, 1969, concert at the historic Fillmore East in New York City captures an early moment from that first tour and will be released on October 25, 2024. Live At The Fillmore East, 1969 is available for pre-order 2-LPs or 2-CDs in the U.S. here and in the U.K. here.
Tom Jones still tours; tickets are available here and here.
When he turned 80 on June 7, 2020, he wrote, in part, “It’s a great feeling to hit this milestone. I’ve been blessed with so many extraordinary experiences and have had the privilege of meeting and working with outstanding, talented and inspiring people across many generations.
“It’s amazing when I think about it! To have a life in music, along with love, family, friends, and the most loyal fans throughout the years – who have allowed me to continue to record and tour the world for over fifty years, is truly an honour.”
He released a well-received studio album, Surrounded By Time, in 2021. His recordings are available in the U.S. here and in the U.K. here.

Jump into a conversationWatching and listening to the guys along with ‘Tom’ literally go bat shit crazy all out on this song is awe inspiring. Amazing what music does for our souls when ‘we let go’. Fan-tastic.
Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young & Jones. The supergroup that never was.
They could have done a killer medley of “Delilah” and “Down by the River”.
