On the heels of last fall’s sold-out tour, English singer/songwriter Joe Jackson has announced a 14-date run through North America from June 18th through a booking at New York City’s storied Apollo Theater on July 15th. Backing Jackson will be his longtime bassist Graham Maby, Teddy Kumpel on guitar, and drummer Doug Yowell. His announcement says more dates augmenting the four already in Canada will likely be added.
Jackson emerged as part of the U.K.’s late 1970s surge of punk/new wave singer/songwriters in the wake of Elvis Costello and Graham Parker. A popular artist on MTV in its early years, he scored with such signature songs as “Is She Really Going Out With Him?” “Sunday Papers” and “I’m The Man” before taking an excursion into reggae on his third album, Beat Crazy. He enjoyed his greatest success when he channeled the spirits of great classic pop song sophisticates like Cole Porter on 1982’s Night and Day, a Top 5 U.S. album that yielded the #6 single “Steppin’ Out.” His most recent release is last fall’s Fast Forward, which he recorded in four different cities – New York, Berlin, Amsterdam and New Orleans – with local players in each locale.
