‘Jingle Jangle Morning,’ 1960s U.S. Folk-Rock Collection, Coming
by Best Classic Bands StaffA new collection celebrating the U.S. folk-rock movement is coming from the U.K.’s Cherry Red Records. Jingle Jangle Morning: The 1960s Folk-Rock Explosion arrives on March 21, 2025, with 74 tracks across three CDs from the company’s Strawberry imprint. It’s available for pre-order in the U.S. here and in the U.K. here. The collection features recordings from such stars as Bob Dylan, the Byrds (whose recording of Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man” includes the lyric in which this title is named), the Lovin’ Spoonful, the Mamas & the Papas, Buffalo Springfield, and Linda Ronstadt.
The label’s announcement describes it as “the most thorough compilation that has ever been assembled of a major movement that transformed popular music, including hits, rarities, and deep cuts from a huge spectrum of artists.”
Rare tracks by Johnny Winter, David Blue and Jesse Lee Kincaid make their CD debut; along with seldom-reissued original 45 versions of songs by Phil Ochs and Tom Rush.
The collection features little known covers of songs by Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne and Clarence White alongside favorites by Judy Collins, Dion, Scott McKenzie, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and others. See the complete track listing below.
The songs were selected and sequenced to sonically illustrate the astonishing growth of folk-rock from 1965 to 1970, from the first hits by the Byrds and Dylan through the integration of psychedelia by the likes of Jefferson Airplane and Love; the launch of the singer-songwriter genre by artists such as Richie Havens, Arlo Guthrie, P.F. Sloan, and Bob Lind; early country-rock by Poco, the Dillards, the Grateful Dead, and Mike Nesmith; and even some teen garage folk-rock rock and folk-rock novelty sides along the way.
The set features detailed liner notes from Richie Unterberger, author of the two-volume 1960s folk-rock history Turn! Turn! Turn!/Eight Miles High.
