The Super Deluxe Edition

Led Zeppelin, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of their forming in 1968, have only revealed a few specifics of what they’re planning in the year ahead. One of those, though, is a reissue, announced today (June 21), of their first live album, The Song Remains the Same, originally released in 1976 for the concert film of the same name, on the band’s Swan Song label.

The album, from Atlantic/Swan Song, is being released on Sept. 7 in a variety of formats, with new remastering supervised by Jimmy Page, including a Super Deluxe Edition that features 2-CDs/4-LPs/3-DVDs with a 28-page book including an essay by Cameron Crowe; the full album’s debut in hi-res 5.1 surround sound on Blu-ray audio; a 2-CD set with a 24-page booklet and a 4-LP 180g edition with a 28-page booklet. The album makes its debut in hi-res 5.1 surround sound on Blu-ray.

From the announcement: “The Super Deluxe Boxed Set will be the most exquisite and elaborate release in the reissue series, recreating the intricate embossing of the set’s original issue and will also mark the first time the full length film and soundtrack have been available in the same package. On the 4-LP set, Page made a change to the track sequence, allowing the epic, 29-minute version of ‘Dazed And Confused’ to be featuring in its entirety on one side of vinyl for the first time.”

The 2-DVD set of the The Song Remains The Same features the full theatrical version of the film plus bonus content including four performance outtakes that were not part of the original film: “Celebration Day,” “Over The Hills And Far Away,” “Misty Mountain Hop,” and “The Ocean.”

The album was originally released on Oct. 22, 1976 of music from the band’s July 27-28-29, 1973 concerts at New York’s Madison Square Garden. It reached #1 in the U.K. and #2 in the U.S. It was then remixed and remastered for a 2007 release.

The Sept. 7 release coincides with the 1968 date when John Bonham, John Paul Jones, Page and Robert Plant played their first live show together, under the moniker “The New Yardbirds.”

Much of the Led Zeppelin’s catalog has received similar elaborate reissues since 2014. Most recently, their 2003 release, How the West Was Won, of performances from their 1972 U.S. concert tour, was reissued on March 23, 2018.

Last December, Jimmy Page said: “There’ll be Led Zeppelin product coming out, for sure, that people haven’t heard because I’m working on that. Next year [2018] will be the 50th year so there’s all manner of surprises coming out.”

One such release is Led Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin, the first and only official illustrated book to be produced in collaboration with the members of the band. The book arrives Oct 2. It’s available for pre-order in the U.S. here and the U.K. here.
