Paul McCartney Begins 2023 Brazil Dates With Surprise Club Show

Paul McCartney performed a club show in Brazil on Tuesday (November 28, 2023) just hours after it was announced on his Facebook page. The surprise concert at Clube do Choro in Brasilia was his most intimate Brazilian show to date, with just a few hundred fans in attendance. The show was announced earlier in the day and sold-out immediately. The abbreviated set of 24 songs was significantly shorter than the 39-song performances he’s been doing on the 2023 edition of his “Got Back” tour which has played in Australia and Mexico. The legend begins a run of eight concerts in Brazil on Nov. 30. The 2023 schedule ends on Dec. 16 at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium.

The fortunate few at Clube do Choro saw McCartney open with “A Hard Day’s Night,” followed by a pair of Wings numbers, “Junior’s Farm” and “Letting Go.” The set also included such Beatles favorites as “Getting Better,” “I’ve Just Seen a Face” and “Lady Madonna.” The five-song encore began with the “Sgt. Pepper’s” reprise and “Helter Skelter,” before closing with three songs from Side Two of Abbey Road: “Golden Slumbers,” “Carry That Weight” and “The End.”

McCartney, who turned 81 on June 18, 2023, launched the “Got Back” tour in February 2022, completing 16 shows across the U.S. before performing at Glastonbury in June 2022. His typical setlist that year was filled with as many as 40 songs, spanning tracks from the Beatles, Wings, and his solo work.

McCartney’s longtime band features Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray (bass/guitar), Rusty Anderson (guitar) and Abe Laboriel Jr (drums).

In a rarity for a McCartney concert, camera phones were not allowed. The only clip was provided by McCartney’s promotional team.

The 2023 edition of the “Got Back” tour started with an arena show in Adelaide, the city where The Beatles made history in 1964 on their first visit to Australia. An estimated 350,000 people lined the streets between the airport and Town Hall to catch a glimpse of the band. McCartney then travelled to Melbourne, Newcastle, Sydney, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast performing in stadiums – with the shows in Newcastle and the Gold Coast being his first concerts there.

His itinerary then took him across the globe for a pair of shows in Mexico City. He then had nearly two weeks off before the Brazil leg. He has yet to announce a 2024 tour.
