David Bowie “No Star” EP, which was released on what would have been his 70th birthday, January 8, 2017

As the clock struck midnight in David Bowie‘s native England tonight (January 8), a mysterious new Bowie video for a song called “No Plan” was released, coinciding with what would have been the star’s 70th birthday. The video features a series of TV screens in a storefront for Newton Electrical, a “wink, wink” reference to his character in the feature film The Man Who Fell to Earth. The song is included on a new four-song EP that was recorded for his musical Lazarus, which was originally workshopped off-Broadway in New York City in late 2015, before anyone except a handful in Bowie’s inner circle knew that he was dying. Lazarus went on to play London’s West End and was inspired by the novel The Man Who Fell to Earth by Walter Tevis.

The No Plan EP–available for download only as of now–comes one year to the day of his well-received Blackstar. At the time of its release, no one realized it would be the final studio album released while the classic rock legend was alive. He died two days later, on January 10, 2016.
