Andrew Gold Celebrated With Box Set, ‘Lonely Boy – The Asylum Years Anthology’
by Best Classic Bands Staff
Andrew Gold, the Los Angeles-based musician who established a reputation as an arranger and key member of Linda Ronstadt’s band before breaking out as a solo artist with his self-titled debut album in 1975, will be the subject of a 7-disc boxed set that celebrates his solo career. Lonely Boy — The Asylum Years Anthology, on 6-CDs/1-DVD is a repackaged repress of his solo years with the label between 1975-1980. The set, from the Esoteric label of the U.K.’s Cherry Red Records, will be released on January 30, 2026. It’s available for pre-order in the U.S./worldwide here and in the U.K. here.
The 74-track collection, named for his 1976 hit, features his four solo albums, as well as outtakes, rarities, a 1977 concert at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles with 17 previously unreleased performances, and a BBC TV concert from 1976. The set’s DVD features six promotional videos, a complete 1977 BBC Old Grey Whistle Test concert broadcast. The entire collection has been remastered from the original Asylum master tapes and repackaged in a clamshell boxed set.
One of the finest musicians and songwriters to emerge from the Los Angeles music scene in the mid-70s, Gold made his solo debut with his self-titled album in 1975. The classic album What’s Wrong With This Picture, produced by Peter Asher, followed in 1976 and spawned the single “Lonely Boy” that helped establish him internationally, notably reaching #7 in the U.S. and #11 in the U.K. The album features Ronstadt singing back-up vocals on several tracks, as well as some of Los Angeles finest studio musicians including Danny Kortchmar, Waddy Wachtel, Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkel, and Kenny Edwards.
His third album, All This and Heaven Too, yielded three international hits: “Thank You For Being a Friend,” “Never Let Her Slip Away” and “How Can This Be Love.” Guest musicians again include Wachtel, Sklar, Kunkel, and Edwards. They’re joined by Jeff Porcaro, as well as several notable names singing backup: Freddie Mercury, Timothy B. Schmit, Jennifer Warnes and J.D. Souther.
Gold, born August 2, 1951, grew up in a musical family. His father, Ernest Gold, earned an Academy Award for his score for the 1960 film, Exodus. His mother, Marni Nixon, provided the singing voice for Natalie Wood in West Side Story, Deborah Kerr in The King and I, and Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. Gold died from heart failure on June 3, 2011, at age 59.
