One day after announcing that he would be having back surgery and thus causing the postponement of his May tour schedule, Brian Wilson thanked his fans for their “well wishes,” noting that the surgery “went very well.”
On Tuesday (May 1), Wilson revealed on his social media platforms that he would be having the surgery “immediately.” That translated to yesterday (May 2). Later that day, he posted his thanks to his fans.
Wilson’s news follows that of another classic rock legend, Bonnie Raitt, who announced on April 30 that she had canceled much of her 2018 tour due to “health issues.”
On May 1, Wilson wrote on his Facebook page:
Dear friends,
As some of you might know I have been having some issues with my back that has very recently gotten worse. It runs in my family, Carl had back problems as well. My doctors have told me that I need to have back surgery immediately. They are optimistic that this will finally relieve the pain.
Sadly, this means we must postpone the upcoming May shows. I’m very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause to everyone who was coming out to see us.
I know that my agents are already in the process of rescheduling and we will have some of the make up dates to announce very soon. We will get you all the info ASAP.
Please know that the music is in my heart and in my soul and me and the boys are looking forward to performing for you very soon.
Love & Mercy,
Brian Wilson
Wilson, who turns 76 on June 20, has had previous back surgery. His tour is currently scheduled to resume on July 15. At year’s end, he, Al Jardine, Blondie Chaplin, and his band will be performing The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album in its entirety along with cuts from his solo Christmas album.
On May 2, Wilson expressed his thanks to his fans, post-surgery, writing: “I was totally blown away by all the well wishes,” adding that “the surgery went very well.”
