On Jan. 3, 2026, Peter Gabriel announced a studio album, o\i, the follow-up to his 2023 release, i/o. And just like its predecessor, the classic rock legend is sharing a new track from o\i on each full moon, with a second mix released each month on the new moon, revealing the whole album at the end of the year. Once again, each song will come with differing interpretations in the shape of Dark Side and Bright Side mixes.
The pair of mixes of the first track, “Been Undone,” each over seven-and-a-half minutes in length, are unmistakably Gabriel. On Feb. 1, as promised, he shared “Put the Bucket Down.” Listen below.
As with 2023’s i/o, Tchad Blake and Mark ‘Spike’ Stent are handling the mixing duties, taking on the Dark Side and Bright Side respectively.
“The songs are a mix of thoughts and feelings,” he writes. “Some of these songs are going to form part of the brain project that I’ve been exploring for a number of years, and some just make me feel happy. I hope you like them.”
Gabriel has not set a release date for o\i and it is not yet available to pre-order. “Been Undone” was written and produced by Gabriel and recorded at Real World Studios, Bath and The Beehive in London. Musicians include Tony Levin on bass, Manu Katché on drums and David Rhodes on electric guitar.
The Dark Side mix of “Been Undone” is available to purchase as a download here; the Bright Side mix is available here.
Of the second track, Gabriel says, “The ‘bucket’ is all the crap that goes around our head all the time, so it is putting the bucket down to find your way forward…
“I started building rhythmic elements around, what I call a lop-sided loop and got quite excited. When we had the band play it, it really came to life so that feels good for me. The band and me working away is the bulk of the song, but when we were in the orchestral sessions I asked John Metcalfe to come up with a part – it was scribbled out on the day in the studio – which is ridiculously simple, but it serves the song nicely.”

Watch Gabriel talk about the 2026 album
Gabriel, born February 13, 1950, used the springboard of the 2023 album to launch a significant tour, his first solo effort in nearly 10 years. The announcement of the 2026 release made no mention of a new tour. Still, the news of o\i is significant, given that it had been more than two decades in between studio albums of new material for Gabriel prior to the 2023 release. i/o is available in a wide variety of formats in the U.S. here, in Canada here and in the U.K. here.
