Billy Joel celebrated his 70th birthday on May 9 with his monthly performance at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Audiences at his record-shattering residency have become accustomed to the appearance of surprise guests and this concert was no exception. Peter Frampton joined the Piano Man to perform two of his classic rock hits, “Show Me the Way” and “Baby, I Love Your Way,” and then returned for the evening’s final encore to accompany Joel on “You May Be Right.”
Watch the performances below.
Since January 2014, Joel has played one show per month at The Garden, an unprecedented run. The May 9 concert marked his 64th consecutive sold-out show at the World’s Most Famous Arena and his 108th overall performance there.
At Thursday night’s 27-song set, Joel was also joined by his daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, on “New York State of Mind.”
In introducing Frampton, Joel said: “This contemporary of mine… had the greatest live album that was ever recorded.”

Frampton recently announced that he will mount his farewell tour. The classic rock legend, in an interview that aired February 23 on CBS This Morning: Saturday, revealed that he has a rare and incurable muscular disease that causes the muscles to weaken slowly.
The primarily U.S. run, announced on Feb. 22, Peter Frampton Finale—The Farewell Tour presented by SiriusXM, and produced by Live Nation, will begin on June 18 and continue throughout the summer and fall.
Inexplicably, he has yet to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He turned 69 on April 22.
