Lisa Marie Presley Memoir Arrives, in Collaboration With Her Daughter, Riley Keough
by Best Classic Bands StaffLisa Marie Presley has had her memoir published posthumously, in collaboration with her daughter, the actress Riley Keough. The book, titled From Here to the Great Unknown, arrived on October 8, 2024, via Random House. In the Jan. 11 announcement, the publisher called it a “raw and riveting story [that] will give us a unique glimpse into one of America’s beloved families and the special bond between mother and daughter.” It’s available in the U.S. here and the U.K. here. The audiobook edition is read by Riley. The book’s title and cover art were revealed on June 4.
More from the announcement: Born to an American myth and raised in the wilds of Graceland, Lisa Marie Presley was never truly understood . . . until now. Before her death, she had been working on a raw, riveting, one-of-a-kind memoir for years, recording countless hours of breathtakingly vulnerable tape, which has finally been put on the page by her daughter.
In late 2022, Lisa Marie asked Riley to help finish the book. A month later, Lisa Marie was dead. Riley got the tapes that her mother had recorded for the book, laid in her bed, and listened as Lisa Marie told story after story about smashing golf carts together in the yards of Graceland, about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about being upstairs, just the two of them. About getting dragged screaming out of the bathroom as she ran towards his body on the floor. About living in Los Angeles with her mother, getting sent to school after school, always kicked out, always in trouble. About her singular, lifelong relationship with Danny Keough, about being married to Michael Jackson, what they shared in common. About motherhood. About deep addiction. About ever-present grief. Riley knew she had to fulfill her mother’s wish to reveal these memories, incandescent and painful, to the world.
“I feel very proud and in awe of my mother,” Keough wrote. “She somehow lived in honesty and truth all the time, no matter how uncomfortable that was for her or the people around her. It was a really aspirational quality and just being around it was liberating. This is also how she approached her autobiography. I know her intention was to tell a human story and connect to people in telling it. I feel incredibly lucky to have had the chance to finish it for her.”
Lisa Marie Presley was a singer and songwriter who was born in Memphis and raised at Graceland as the only child of Elvis and Priscilla Presley. She released three studio albums throughout her music career—To Whom It May Concern, Now What, and Storm & Grace—the first of which was certified gold. Lisa Marie died on January 12, 2023.
Riley Keough is an Emmy, Golden Globe, and Independent Spirit Award-nominated actress. She recently starred in the 2023 limited series, Daisy Jones & the Six, which earned multiple Emmy Award nominations, including one for Keough in the category Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. She also co-directed War Pony (2022), which won the Caméra d’Or for best first feature at Cannes, and cofounded the production company Felix Culpa with Gina Gammell. She is the eldest daughter of Lisa Marie Presley and sole trustee of Graceland.
